Check Point VPN-1/FireWall-1

Configuration will not export

AERAsec Network Services and Security GmbH

Platform:  Windows and Unix
Product: Check Point Next Generation AI
Problem: The following problem is described for Microsoft Windows Server, but is also there when running NG AI under any Unix or Linux when gtar and gzip aren't in the local directory where upgrade_export is placed.
When using the command $FWDIR\bin\upgrade_utils\upgrade_export to export the current configuration, an error message is displayed:

C:>upgrade_export c:\MyConfig
...

Checking the existence of necessary files...
Copying files to temp dir...
Building configuration file...
Compressing the files...
Error: Failed to execute "C:\WINNT\FW1\NG\bin\upgrade_tools\.\gtar.exe" -c -C "
C:\WINNT\FW1\NG\tmp\upgrade_temp_dir" -f "test.tgz.tar" . command
Error: Failed to compress Check Point Software files

This command is necessary for moving the Management Server from one machine to another or when upgrading the Management (without losing the configuration).

Workaround/Fix: Fixed in NG AI R55 HFA_12.
In earlier versions, the files needed for compressing the exported data are gtar.exe and gzip.exe, which aren't located in this directory. Just copy these files from $CPDIR\util to the directory where upgrade_export.exe is placed. Then, your export will run without an error.

Be sure to keep the file with your exported configuration safe! This information is private and shouldn't become public...
