Check Point R70

How to license firewalls working with CPUs with more than one core

AERAsec Network Services and Security GmbH

Platform:  Any platform for Check Point VPN-1/FireWall-1
Product: Check Point R70
Problem: The licensing of gateways running R70 and above is based on the use of cores. The product CoreXL supports not only a single core but more than one core of each processor. A performance increase is the consequence.
CoreXL and therefore also the gateway software requires a corresponding license.
About licenses:

Check Point has changed the licensing of CoreXL completely.
In earlier times (e.g. 2008/2009) it was mandatory to obtain a license for each core in the system - even if the performance increase hasn't been needed. Licensing CoreXL has been changed to 'optional' now. A license will turn on the use of more cores by the FWD, but it's not mandatory any more to license each core of the system.
Any customer having licensed CoreXL due to the old (mandatory) scheme can use all licensed cores of his or her system as before. Returning the license for CoreXL is not possible, even if the increased performance isn't needed or wanted. For further information about this fact please contact your Check Point representative.
